The Indigenous Journalism and Communications Arts program hosted pîkiskwêwin: Sharing Indigenous Languages on Radio & Online from March 25 – 27, 2026, at the Regina Campus. The gathering brought together more than 60 participants for panels, presentations, and discussions focused on Indigenous language revitalization through media.
Sessions explored topics such as storytelling, journalism, student-led media initiatives, funding opportunities, ethical considerations around AI, translation, and language archiving — each highlighting different approaches to supporting and strengthening Indigenous languages across platforms.
Experienced journalists from MBC Radio, Abel Charles (Lac La Ronge Indian Band), Robert Merasty (Île-à-la-Crosse), Vince Natamogan (Thunderchild First Nation), and David McIntyre (Patuanak ERFN), shared insights on the challenges of translating Western news into Indigenous languages, citing the need to develop or adapt terminology – an issue highlighted during the 2019 pandemic in particular.
We thank the speakers, panelists, and attendees for contributing their knowledge and experiences. It was an honour to support and host this important gathering at Ƶ.
